Scrying

What is Scrying?

I was taught Scrying or crystal gazing when I was very young. In fact, I had no idea I was being taught how to connect to divine and receive message. My first memory was looking for shapes in the clouds. This was a common game for me as a child and I enjoy many fun hours spent with my own daughter lying on top of the trampoline making up stories about all that we saw in the clouds and in the sky

The word “Scrying” comes from the Old English word descry which means “to make out dimly “or “to revel” So when we scry, we are looking for the unseen. Using our senses to see things with our second sight. The way I view scrying is helping us get in touch with our minds eye. Scrying was first seen or mentioned in documents as far back as the 10th Century. This was in ancient Persian. It was very popular and then the Christian church outlawed the act of scrying as it was seen as working with the devil.

Many people use scrying as a powerful form of self-understanding. If you are wanting to find your purpose in life or to ask for a meaning or direction you can use scrying as a way to get in touch with your needs, dreams or goals.

What do you use to scry?

Most people know about scrying but unaware that this is what it is called. You scry when you gaze or do readings from a crystal ball. The most popular way scrying is performed is with reflective surface, such as a mirror, water or as we stated a crystal ball.

Wax

Through out time wax dripped into water or onto a water surface was used. You then look at the images or words that has been formed in the dried wax. This is very similar with when you do a tea leaf reading.

Clouds

As I discussed earlier cloud gazing. Looking at the clouds and seeing the shapes that they form. This has been used since the beginning of time.

Mirror

This is also known as catoptromancy. To do this type of scrying you must relax and quieten your mind and vision while staring into the mirror. After a while you will begin to see images and scenes will present them to your minds eye for you.

Water

Staring into a bowl of water you can perceive images once you have relaxed your mind and vision. You can also drop in pebbles and see what comes with the ripples in the water. You can then interpret the ripples for your reading.

Oil

To complete this type of scrying you must pour oil into a dish. With your fingers you then rub it all over the dish or cup that you have tipped the oil into. Once covered you then move the bowl and observe the information that is observed with the light is reflected off the oil.

Fire

This is the most ancient form of scrying. When you gaze into a fiery flames of vision. This can be down with a simple candle or oil lamp. When used in a bonfire it is meant to be very powerful.

Smoke

As the smoke rises from the fire it will create ethereal shapes. This will present to you as spiritual messages.

Crystal

This is the most common but very effective form of scrying. It is mostly seen done with a crystal ball.

How to practise scrying

scrying - reflections in water or oil

Water scrying

I thought water scrying would be the easiest for us to practise on tonight. Water Scrying is also known as hydromancy.

What you need

  • A bowl ( if you can get a dark coloured bowl such as natural wood or black in colour would work best)

  • Water

  • Candle and Matches

  • Crystal

  • Table

  • Dark area to read in

By using a dark or wooden bowl it is said that it is easier to relax your mind and concentrate on the object better Some people like to use rain water or mineral water but you can just use tap water.

Place your crystal in the bowl. Make sure you have candles in the area so you can see what is being show to you within the water. I like to use a clear quartz crystal as I use this to connect with spirit. Other may use an object.

Before you start make sure you set up the room and the intention. You can use a smudge stick to clear the area and go over the bowl or you can light your two candles and set the intention of protection and clear connection as you light them. You need to place each candle on either side of the bowl so that you can see the water.

Clear the mind. This is where you need to place yourself in a meditative state and allow the images to come to you. Before I scry I like to do a meditation to place in this state of mind.

Stare into the Water. Once you are calm through deep breathing and connecting to spirit daze into the bowl of water. You will know if you are connecting as you will feel calm yet focused.

The next step is to relax your eyes. This is why we have placed a crystal or object into the bowl. You want to look at this as your main focus. Make sure you are sitting comfortably and remember to be patient.

Hold the intention of connection to spirit and to ask to “see” into the bowl of water. Setting the intention of seeing something in the scrying bowl is very important. You need to hold the intent so that you will actually connect and see a message or symbol.

Gaze into the water. Relax your eyes. Relax your face. Breath deeply. Remember the images will come quickly and they will also leave quickly. Don’t judge yourself just enjoy the connection. You are just there to watch, not to control what you see in the scrying bowl.

Allow you mind to wander. This is perfect. Make sure you keep your focus on the scrying bowl. You may only see one image. A shape or a word. You may see a whole scene play out. I see these as movies in my mind. You may be able to understand what the message means. You may need to sit with it for a while. You need to work out where to place the bowl. Close to your face or a distance. For each person it will be different.
